The Wattled Broadbill is a vibrant broadbill with black and white plumage, a bright blue bill, and a striking purplish-pink wattle around its eye. It is endemic to the Philippines.
Where to spot
Lowland primary and mature secondary forests on the island of Mindanao and nearby smaller islands in the southern Philippines.
How to spot
Look for it in the mid-story and sub-canopy. Listen for its distinctive, often repeated calls. Patience is required as it can be shy and hard to spot in dense foliage.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon.
The Wattled Broadbill is named after Joseph Beal Steere, an American ornithologist. Its unique wattle is one of the most prominent among broadbills.
