Spotted
The Dusky Broadbill is a large, somewhat drab broadbill, primarily dusky brown and black with a large, pale bill. It is known for its powerful calls.
Where to spot
Lowland tropical rainforests and mature secondary forests across Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and parts of mainland Southeast Asia.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, resonant, frog-like croaking calls, often given by several birds in chorus. It can be challenging to spot as it often perches motionless in dense foliage.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during daylight hours.
Unlike many brightly colored broadbills, the Dusky Broadbill's camouflage helps it blend into the dark understory of its rainforest habitat.
