Spotted
The Bougainville Thrush (*Turdus bougainvillei*) is an endemic form of Island Thrush restricted to the island of Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. It is a medium-sized, dark thrush adapted to montane forest ecosystems.
Where to spot
Exclusively found in the humid montane forests of Bougainville Island, part of Papua New Guinea's territory in the Solomon Islands chain, typically at higher altitudes.
How to spot
Look for its dark, uniform plumage. It tends to be shy, foraging in dense undergrowth or on the forest floor. Listening for its thrush-like calls or simple song is often the most effective observation method.
When to spot
Resident year-round. It is most active during the cooler parts of the day. Best observed during the local breeding season when birds are more vocal.
This thrush's isolated existence on Bougainville has led to its distinct genetic characteristics, making it a valuable subject for island biogeography studies.
