The Black-headed Weaver is a common and distinctive weaver bird, with breeding males having a brilliant yellow body and a fully black head. It is a highly social and adaptable species.
Where to spot
Widespread across West and Central Africa, from Senegal to Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. Inhabits savannas, grasslands, agricultural areas, towns, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for its bright yellow body and entirely black head (in breeding males). They are often found in large, noisy colonies. Listen for their constant, buzzing calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Breeding activity is most prominent during the rainy season, when males are in their brightest plumage and are actively building nests.
