Spotted
The Compact Weaver, also known as the Brown-capped Weaver, is a small, relatively dull-coloured weaver species found in swampy grasslands and forest edges in Central Africa.
Where to spot
Distributed across a band of Central Africa, from Nigeria to Democratic Republic of Congo, preferring swampy clearings, forest edges, and tall grass.
How to spot
Its small size and drab plumage make it easy to overlook. Search in dense, wet grasslands and listen for its quiet calls. Patience is required to spot this secretive bird.
When to spot
Present year-round. Observations might be more frequent during the breeding season when birds are more active in territory defense and nesting.
Unlike many large-billed weavers, this species has a rather small bill, adapted for feeding on small seeds and insects.
