Spotted
Jackson's Widowbird is a unique African weaver known for the male's extraordinary courtship display. Breeding males are glossy black with a very long, stiff tail.
Where to spot
Endemic to the highlands of East Africa, primarily Kenya and Tanzania, inhabiting open grasslands and savannas.
How to spot
Look for the male's glossy black plumage and long tail. The best way to identify them is by observing their remarkable ground display leaps in their grassland habitat.
When to spot
Most active and visible during the breeding season, usually the rainy season (March-May and Oct-Dec in Kenya), when males perform their spectacular aerial and ground displays.
