Spotted
The Upper Magdalena Tapaculo is a small, dark, and very secretive bird of the Andean understory. It is challenging to spot due to its preference for dense vegetation and its skulking habits.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid montane forests, specifically in the upper Magdalena River valley and adjacent slopes in central Colombia.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic song, which is crucial for identification. Patiently watch the lowest strata of dense forest, focusing on areas with tangled vegetation, as it mostly moves by hopping on the ground.
When to spot
Active year-round. Its vocalizations are most prominent during the breeding season, typically heard in the early morning and late afternoon.
This tapaculo was described relatively recently and is a testament to the cryptic diversity within the genus Scytalopus, where many species look similar but differ in voice and genetics.
