Spotted
A medium-sized tapaculo with a uniform ash-gray plumage, found in high-elevation cloud forests. It is a secretive bird that forages in dense undergrowth.
Where to spot
Found in the humid montane forests and cloud forests of the Andes, from northern Colombia south through Ecuador and into northern Peru. Typically at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often rattling or churring calls. It is extremely shy and difficult to see; focus on detecting it by sound and then waiting patiently near the source in dense cover.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its range.

Its rather uniform gray coloration provides excellent camouflage against the mossy, shadowy backdrop of the high-altitude cloud forests it inhabits.
