Spotted
A stunning and endangered cotinga species endemic to the humid forests of Costa Rica and Panama. The male is vibrant turquoise-blue with a deep purple throat and belly.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill forests on the Pacific slope of Costa Rica and western Panama.
How to spot
Scan the mid-story and canopy of tall forests, particularly near fruiting trees. The male's brilliant turquoise and purple plumage is unmistakable. They can be very quiet and blend with the light.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the breeding season (often dry season) when males are more active. Look in the early morning.
This species is one of the most geographically restricted cotingas, confined to a narrow strip of forest on the Pacific slope.
