Where to spot
Humid montane and foothill forests on the Pacific slope of Costa Rica and western Panama.
How to spot
Look for it in the mid-story and canopy, often perched silently. Its large size, impressive crest, and bare throat are unmistakable. Listen for its deep, booming calls.
When to spot
Resident, but may make seasonal altitudinal movements. Most vocal during the breeding season, particularly in the early morning.
The male's bare, inflatable throat patch turns a vivid orange during courtship displays, attracting females.
