A reclusive and poorly known cotinga species inhabiting the high-altitude cloud forests of the Andes. It is characterized by its dark plumage with a rufous or chestnut belly.
Where to spot
High-altitude humid montane and cloud forests (usually above 2,500m) in the northern Andes of Colombia and northern Ecuador.
How to spot
Requires dedicated searching in dense cloud forest undergrowth. Often detected by its calls, which are a series of whistled notes. Patience is key as they are shy and forage low.
When to spot
