A breathtakingly beautiful cotinga species found in the humid forests of Central America. The male is iridescent sky-blue with a striking purple throat and belly.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill forests on the Caribbean slope from southern Mexico to northern Honduras, and on the Pacific slope of Costa Rica and Panama.
How to spot
Scan the mid-story and canopy of tall trees, often near fruiting plants. Look for its brilliant blue and purple plumage. They are often quiet and still, making them difficult to spot despite their color.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings when feeding on fruits.
