The Papuan Swiftlet is an agile, medium-sized swift endemic to New Guinea. It is typically found soaring over various habitats, from forests to open country, hunting insects on the wing.
Where to spot
Endemic to New Guinea, found across a wide range of altitudes from lowlands to montane forests. Look for them over forest clearings, rivers, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
Identify by its fast, erratic flight patterns and relatively large size compared to other swiftlets in its range. Observe them soaring high, often in small groups, searching for airborne insects.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, particularly visible during periods of insect abundance or when foraging over suitable habitats.
Unlike many swiftlets that nest in caves, the Papuan Swiftlet is known to nest in tree hollows, making it one of the few swiftlets not primarily associated with cave systems.
