A large, dark swift found in southeastern South America, named for its uniform dark, sooty plumage. It often associates with rocky terrain and waterfalls for nesting.
Where to spot
Primarily found in southeastern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. Generally inhabits areas with suitable cliffs and waterfalls in humid forests.
How to spot
Look for a large, uniformly dark swift with a relatively short, square tail. They fly with powerful, direct wing beats and can often be seen foraging high above the landscape, sometimes in flocks.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its range, but more concentrated around nesting sites during the breeding season (typically austral spring and summer).
The Sooty Swift often nests in large colonies behind or within the spray zones of waterfalls, a protective behavior shared with some other large Cypseloides swifts.
