Spotted
The Indochinese Needletail (*Hirundapus cochinchinensis*) is a large swift native to Southeast Asia. It is closely related to the White-throated Needletail but distinguished by its paler rump and different plumage pattern.
Where to spot
Predominantly Southeast Asia, from eastern Myanmar and Thailand east through Laos, Vietnam, and parts of southern China.
How to spot
Scan high above forested hills and open landscapes. Look for a large, powerful swift with broad wings, a relatively short tail, and note the contrast between its dark body and slightly paler rump and belly.
When to spot
Year-round in its resident range, though some local or altitudinal movements may occur.
Though often confused with the White-throated Needletail where their ranges overlap, the Indochinese Needletail can be identified by its distinctive sooty-brown underparts and paler rump, lacking the bright white undertail coverts.
