Spotted
The Dark-rumped Swift (Apus acuticauda) is a large, dark swift species found in mountainous regions of Asia. As its name suggests, it lacks the contrasting pale rump found in some other swift species. It is a powerful flyer, perfectly adapted to aerial life.
Where to spot
Primarily found in the Himalayas and parts of Southeast Asia, often soaring over hills, mountains, and adjacent valleys. They are typically associated with rugged, high-altitude terrain.
How to spot
Look for its large size and entirely dark plumage, especially the lack of a white rump, which distinguishes it from many other Apus swifts. Observe its rapid, sweeping flight high in the sky, often alone or in small groups.
When to spot
Best observed during the warmer months, typically from spring to autumn, when they are breeding. They are active throughout the day, foraging for insects in the clear mountain air.

Unlike many swifts that have pale or white rumps, the uniform dark plumage of the Dark-rumped Swift is a key identification feature, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the high skies.
