Spotted
The Tanimbar Megapode is a secretive megapode species confined to the Tanimbar Islands in Indonesia. Its dark plumage provides excellent camouflage within the dense forest undergrowth.
Where to spot
Exclusively found on the Tanimbar Islands, a group of islands in the Maluku province of Indonesia.
How to spot
Observe carefully in lowland forests, especially near coastal areas or disturbed ground suitable for mound building. They are shy and require patience to spot.
When to spot
Year-round, with peak activity often in the early morning and late afternoon.
Despite its elusive nature, its presence is often indicated by the large incubation mounds it constructs from sand or decaying vegetation.
