Spotted
The Maleo is a unique, medium-sized megapode endemic to Sulawesi and nearby islands in Indonesia. It is distinctive with its prominent bony casque (helmet-like projection) on its head, dark body, and contrasting pinkish-white underside.
Where to spot
Endemic to Sulawesi and some smaller adjacent islands (e.g., Buton, Siau) in Indonesia. Found in lowland and hill rainforests, especially near coastal areas with volcanic sand beaches or active geothermal sites which they utilize for nesting.
How to spot
Look for a striking black bird with a prominent, helmet-like casque on its head and a contrasting pinkish-white belly. They are often seen on communal nesting grounds, where they dig large holes to bury their eggs. They are generally shy and elusive outside of these nesting areas.
When to spot
Year-round. Eggs are laid throughout the year, but peak nesting activity often occurs during the dry season when sand temperatures are more consistent.

Unlike most megapodes that build mounds of decaying vegetation, the Maleo primarily uses geothermal heat or sun-heated volcanic sands to incubate its eggs, often laying them communally in large, traditional nesting grounds.
