Spotted
The Red-billed Talegalla is a large, ground-dwelling megapode found in the lowlands of New Guinea. It is characterized by its dull black plumage, distinctive bright red bill, and a yellowish facial patch.
Where to spot
Endemic to the lowland rainforests of New Guinea, primarily found in the western and central parts of the island, typically below 800 meters elevation.
How to spot
Look for a large, dark, turkey-like bird with a prominent red bill. They are often seen scratching through leaf litter. Listen for their loud, resonant calls, which are a good way to locate them in dense forest, as they can be shy and difficult to spot.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon when they are more active foraging on the forest floor and around their incubation mounds.

Red-billed Talegallas, like other megapodes, do not sit on their eggs to incubate them. Instead, they construct large mounds of decaying vegetation, relying on the heat generated by decomposition to warm their clutch.
