Spotted
The Swan Goose is a large, distinctive goose native to Asia, easily recognized by its long, slender neck and often a prominent black bill with a pale base. It is the wild ancestor of the domestic Chinese and African geese.
Where to spot
Breeds in northern Asia, including regions of Siberia, Mongolia, and northeastern China. Winters predominantly in central and eastern China, Korea, and Japan, favoring wetlands, grasslands, and steppes.
How to spot
Look for its elegant, swan-like neck and a distinctively dark bill. Listen for its deep, resonant honking calls. Often found grazing in open fields near water or on large wetlands, frequently associating with other goose species.
When to spot
Best observed during the wintering season (October to March) in its southern range, or during its spring and autumn migrations. Breeding occurs from April to June.

Unlike its domesticated descendants, wild Swan Geese typically do not possess the prominent knob at the base of the bill, which is a trait developed through selective breeding in domestic varieties.
