The Mandarin Duck is one of the most spectacularly colored waterfowl species, renowned for the male's elaborate plumage featuring iridescent crests, orange 'sails,' and intricate patterns. Females are more subdued in grey and brown, but still elegant. Native to East Asia, feral populations exist in parts of Europe and North America.
Where to spot
Native to forested areas near shallow lakes, ponds, and rivers in East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, parts of Russia). Feral populations are well-established in the UK and other parts of Western Europe, as well as isolated areas in North America, usually in parks and ornamental ponds.
How to spot
Males are unmistakable due to their unique, elaborate plumage. Females are grey-brown with a white eye-ring and stripe extending back from the eye. Look for them in shaded, wooded water bodies, often perching on branches overhanging the water.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (spring and early summer) when males are in full breeding plumage. They are generally visible year-round in areas with resident populations.
