Found along fast-flowing rivers, streams, and mountain lakes with dense forest cover in the Andes Mountains of Chile and Argentina, from central Chile southwards, and southwestern Argentina.

Look for them along rocky rivers and streams, often alone or in pairs. Their dark plumage provides excellent camouflage against the forested backdrop, so patience and quiet observation from a distance are crucial. Listen for their distinctive whistles and quacks.
