The Andean Ruddy Duck (Oxyura ferruginea) is a stiff-tailed duck native to the Andean highlands of South America. It is closely related to the North American Ruddy Duck and shares many behavioral traits, including its upright, stiff tail and diving prowess.
Where to spot
Found in the Andes Mountains from Colombia south through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. Inhabits high-altitude freshwater lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers, especially those with emergent vegetation.
How to spot
Look for its stout body, relatively large head, and stiff tail often held upright. Males in breeding plumage are rich rufous-brown with a black head and a bright blue bill. Females and non-breeding males are duller. Watch for their characteristic diving behavior.
When to spot
Year-round resident within its high-altitude range. More active and conspicuous during the breeding season (spring/summer in the Southern Hemisphere), when males are in full display plumage.
