The Tufted Duck is a distinctive medium-sized diving duck, easily recognized by the prominent crest on the back of its head. Males are striking with their glossy black plumage and bright white flanks, while females are dark brown.
Where to spot
Breeds across most of temperate and northern Eurasia, from Iceland to Russia, and occasionally in Alaska. Winters widely across western and southern Europe, North Africa, and much of Asia, preferring freshwater lakes, reservoirs, and slow rivers.
How to spot
Look for them on open freshwater bodies, often associating with Common Pochards. Males are unmistakable with their black bodies, white flanks, and prominent tuft. Females are dark brown but still show a slight tuft and a pale patch at the base of the bill.
When to spot
Observable year-round in much of its range, but best during migration and winter when larger flocks gather on open water.

Tufted Ducks often dive for mussels and other aquatic invertebrates, sometimes forming large flocks that 'dabble' synchronously, creating a ripple effect on the water's surface.
