The Common Pochard is a medium-sized diving duck with a distinctive profile. The male has a reddish-chestnut head, a black breast, and a pale grey body. Females are brownish with a darker head and pale lore. They are known for forming large rafts on open water.
Where to spot
Breeds across temperate Europe and Asia. Winters south of its breeding range in Western and Southern Europe, North Africa, and Southern Asia. Favors large, open freshwater lakes, reservoirs, and slow-flowing rivers.
How to spot
Look for the male's reddish-chestnut head, black breast, and pale grey body. Both sexes have a prominent pale grey bar on the speculum visible in flight. They are typically found in large groups on open water, frequently diving for food.

Best observed during the non-breeding season (October-March) in its wintering grounds, when large flocks gather. Also seen during spring and autumn migration (March-April, September-October).
