Spotted
The Slaty-backed Jungle Flycatcher is a small, subtle bird with slaty-grey upperparts, a pale throat, and buffy underparts. It is a quiet inhabitant of dense, humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in mountainous regions of Southeast Asia, including parts of the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. It prefers dense broadleaf montane forests.
How to spot
Look for its slaty-grey back and pale throat. It tends to stay low and is quite secretive. Listening for its soft, high-pitched calls is often the most effective way to detect its presence.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning, foraging in the forest understory.
This species is often found foraging on or near the forest floor, gleaning insects from leaf litter and low vegetation, making it a key component of the forest's ground-level ecology.
