Spotted
A recently described and critically endangered species of akalat, known from a very small range in Tanzania. It is extremely rare and elusive.
Where to spot
Restricted to a few isolated montane forest patches in the Rubeho Mountains of Tanzania.
How to spot
Observing this species is exceptionally challenging and requires targeted conservation efforts. Best hope is to hear its distinctive calls.
When to spot
Due to its extreme rarity and limited range, specific observation times are not widely known, but general forest birdwatching times apply.
This akalat was only formally described in 2004, highlighting how new species can still be discovered even in well-studied bird families.
