Spotted
The Streaked Shearwater is a large shearwater of the North Pacific, distinctive for its streaked head and neck. It is a highly migratory species.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands off Japan, Korea, and China. Undertakes long migrations across the western Pacific, reaching as far south as Australia and the Philippines, and west into the Indian Ocean.
How to spot
Look for its large size, pale streaking on the head and neck, dark upperparts, and white underparts. Its flight is strong and purposeful, with long glides. Often seen in large feeding flocks. Best observed on pelagic trips in the western North Pacific, East China Sea, or during migration off Asian coasts.
When to spot
Breeding occurs from May to November. Observed at sea during migration in spring and autumn, and in non-breeding areas during the northern winter.
