Spotted
The Grey Petrel is a large, uniform grey petrel of the Southern Ocean, known for its powerful, gliding flight. It is a highly pelagic species.
Where to spot
Circumpolar in the Southern Ocean, breeding on sub-Antarctic islands such as Gough, Kerguelen, Macquarie, and the Antipodes. Disperses widely across cool temperate and sub-Antarctic waters.
How to spot
Identify by its overall uniform grey plumage, slightly paler face, and dark bill. Its flight is strong and graceful, with long glides on stiff wings. Best observed during pelagic trips in the Southern Ocean, often following ships.
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral winter (May-October). Can be observed at sea year-round, with peak sightings during the non-breeding season in colder waters.
