A large shearwater of the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, known for its long-winged, stiff-winged gliding flight. It breeds in large colonies on islands and rocky coasts, returning to sea to feed.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands and coastal cliffs in the Mediterranean Sea and eastern Atlantic Ocean (Madeira, Canary Islands). Spends non-breeding season mainly in the South Atlantic Ocean.
How to spot
Look for its large size, brown-grey upperparts, white underparts, and characteristic long-winged glides close to the water. Best seen from boats or coastal headlands overlooking the sea.
When to spot
Breeding season in the Northern Hemisphere is from late spring to early autumn. Observed during migration in the Atlantic and in the South Atlantic during the boreal winter.

Scopoli's Shearwaters are highly vocal at their breeding colonies, especially at night, producing raucous, wailing calls that can be heard from a distance, contributing to the atmosphere of the islands.
