Spotted
Bannerman's Shearwater is a small, pelagic seabird found in the Pacific Ocean. It's characterized by its dark upperparts and white underparts, typical of many shearwater species, and is often challenging to observe at sea.
Where to spot
Primarily pelagic in the western North Pacific Ocean, especially around the Ogasawara and Bonin Islands of Japan. Occasionally seen further afield during non-breeding dispersal.
How to spot
Observation is difficult and usually requires pelagic birding trips in its known range. Look for its characteristic 'shearing' flight low over the waves. Distinguish from similar small shearwaters by subtle plumage differences and specific range.
When to spot
Most active at sea during the non-breeding season. Breeding occurs during the northern hemisphere's warmer months, when birds return to their island colonies.

This shearwater is endemic to a small number of islands in the Ogasawara archipelago of Japan, making its breeding grounds particularly restricted.
