Spotted
The Great-winged Petrel is a large, dark gadfly petrel with long, narrow wings, found in the Southern Hemisphere. It is known for its graceful, sweeping flight over the open ocean.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Indian and South Pacific Oceans, breeding on remote islands such as Tristan da Cunha, Gough, Crozet, Kerguelen, and islands off Australia and New Zealand.
How to spot
Look for its large size, entirely dark sooty-brown plumage, and long, narrow wings. Its flight is strong and gliding, often making high arcs. Best observed during pelagic trips in the appropriate ocean basins, especially off Australia and New Zealand.
When to spot
Breeding season is typically during the austral winter (May-October), but can vary. Observed at sea year-round throughout its vast oceanic distribution.

Like many gadfly petrels, the Great-winged Petrel emits distinctive, often eerie nocturnal calls at its breeding colonies, which are essential for pair bonding and navigation in the dark.
