Spotted
The White-necked Petrel is a beautiful gadfly petrel of the Pacific Ocean, characterized by its dark cap, white nape, and distinct dark M-pattern on its upperwing.
Where to spot
Breeds on Lord Howe Island (Australia) and possibly other islands in the western Pacific. Migrates to the central and eastern North Pacific Ocean, from Hawaii to Japan and North America.
How to spot
Identify by its dark cap, white nape (collar), white underparts, and a prominent dark 'M' pattern across its grey upperwing. Its flight is strong, arcing, and agile. Best observed on pelagic trips in the western North Pacific, off Australia, or in suitable North Pacific waters.
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral summer (November-April). Observed in the North Pacific during the northern summer (May-October) and off Australia during the austral winter.
