The Shining Flycatcher is a highly iridescent species found across parts of New Guinea, Australia, and the Solomon Islands. Males are a stunning glossy blue-black, while females are rufous.
Where to spot
Widespread across New Guinea, northern Australia, and the Solomon Islands. Inhabits mangroves, lowland rainforests, and other wet woodlands, often near water.
How to spot
Look for the male's brilliant iridescent blue-black plumage or the female's striking rufous color. They often forage low to the ground, sometimes near water. Listen for their harsh, grating calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the breeding season, typically in the mornings and late afternoons.
