Spotted
The Henderson Petrel is a critically endangered, dark gadfly petrel endemic to the Pitcairn Islands. It is known for its distinctive calls and nocturnal breeding habits.
Where to spot
Breeds exclusively on Henderson Island in the Pitcairn Group, South Pacific. Forages in the surrounding waters of the South Pacific Ocean.
How to spot
Identify by its dark plumage, subtle pale bar on the upperwing, and dark underwing. Its flight is typical of gadfly petrels, powerful and arcing. Due to its extreme rarity and remote habitat, observation is highly challenging.
When to spot
Breeding occurs from October to April. Observations at sea are extremely rare and opportunistic, usually requiring specialized expeditions to the Pitcairn Islands region.
