Spotted
Fea's Petrel is a medium-sized gadfly petrel with dark grey upperparts and white underparts, breeding on islands in the North Atlantic. It is a highly pelagic species.
Where to spot
Breeds on the Cape Verde Islands and Bugio Island (Desertas, Madeira). Forages widely in the North and South Atlantic Oceans, from the Azores to Brazil.
How to spot
Identify by its dark grey upperparts, white underparts, and strong, arcing flight typical of gadfly petrels. Distinguishing from Desertas Petrel (P. rupinarum) is very challenging and often relies on size and calls. Best seen on pelagic trips off the Macaronesian islands or Eastern North Atlantic.
When to spot
Breeding season varies by colony, generally from late spring to autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Can be observed at sea throughout the year during migration or non-breeding.
