Murphy's Petrel is a large, dark-grey gadfly petrel of the central Pacific, known for its distinctive foraging behavior and vocalizations at night.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands in the Central Pacific, including the Gambier Islands, Ducie Island, and Henderson Island. Forages widely across the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.
How to spot
Identify by its large size, uniform sooty-grey plumage, and a distinctive pale shaft streak on the outer primary feathers. Its flight is strong and purposeful with deep wingbeats. Best seen on pelagic trips in the central Pacific.
When to spot
Breeding occurs from December to June. Can be observed at sea throughout the year, with peak sightings during the austral summer in the central Pacific.
This species has a remarkable foraging range, traveling thousands of kilometers from its breeding grounds to feed in the nutrient-rich waters of the sub-Antarctic Convergence.
