Spotted
The Dusky Nightjar is a cryptic and often overlooked nightjar species found across a wide range of Sub-Saharan Africa. Its dark, mottled plumage provides excellent camouflage against the night sky or dark earth.
Where to spot
Widespread across Sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting a variety of open and semi-open habitats, including woodlands, savannas, and rocky areas.
How to spot
Listen carefully for its vocalizations, particularly at dusk and dawn. They are masters of camouflage during the day, often resting motionless on the ground or on rocks. Use a spotlight for night observation to spot their eyeshine.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, most active at dusk and dawn. Can be observed year-round in its resident range, where it occupies its territory consistently.
The Dusky Nightjar's call is often described as a soft, repeated 'churr' or 'choo-choo,' distinct enough to help identify it amidst the diverse array of other African nightjar species.
