Spotted
Archbold's Nightjar is a rarely seen high-altitude specialist, found only in the remote mountain ranges of New Guinea. Its robust build and cryptic plumage are well-suited to its rugged montane habitat.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high mountain ranges of New Guinea, typically found in subalpine and alpine grasslands, shrublands, and mossy forests above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet).
How to spot
Observing Archbold's Nightjar is extremely difficult given its remote, high-altitude habitat. Dedicated expeditions during dusk or dawn in suitable montane environments are necessary, often relying on calls.
When to spot
Active during twilight and throughout the night, when it forages. Due to its montane habitat, observation opportunities are limited and often depend on specialized expeditions.
Named after Richard Archbold, an American explorer and zoologist, this nightjar is one of the least known nightjar species due to its remote, high-altitude habitat in New Guinea's mountains.
