The Sulawesi Nightjar is a species confined to Sulawesi and some adjacent islands in Indonesia. Like other nightjars, it possesses superb camouflage, blending perfectly into its forest environment.
Where to spot
Confined to Sulawesi and surrounding Indonesian islands, preferring forest edges, disturbed areas, and open woodlands.
How to spot
Locate by its distinctive vocalizations at night, which are often the first sign of its presence. Scan forest edges and clearings with a spotlight to catch sight of it on the ground or low perches.
When to spot
Nocturnal, from late evening through early morning, when it is most vocal and active in hunting insects.
This nightjar's plumage mimics tree bark or dead leaves so effectively that it can virtually vanish from sight when resting during the day, even in plain view.
