Spotted
As its name implies, the Little Nightjar is one of the smaller members of the nightjar family. Despite its size, it is a highly effective nocturnal insect hunter, relying on its agility and camouflage.
Where to spot
Widespread across South America, found in a variety of habitats including open woodlands, savannas, grasslands, and semi-arid scrublands.
How to spot
Listen for its high-pitched, often repetitive calls at night. Look for its quick, agile flight at dusk or dawn. Spotting it during the day requires careful scanning of the ground or low perches for its well-blended form.
When to spot
Primarily active during twilight and throughout the night when foraging. It remains perfectly camouflaged and hidden during daylight hours.
Its small size allows it to be particularly inconspicuous, even more so than some larger nightjar species, making it a challenge to spot.
