Spotted
Bates's Nightjar is a cryptically plumaged nightjar found in the rainforests of Central Africa. Its excellent camouflage makes it incredibly difficult to spot during the day, as it blends perfectly with the forest floor.
Where to spot
Found in Central African rainforests, including countries like Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, and Democratic Republic of Congo.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive calls in dense forest habitats. Spotting them requires immense patience and often a spotlight during night walks, as their plumage blends perfectly with leaf litter and bark.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, best observed at dusk or dawn, or on moonlit nights when they are most active. Daytime observations are rare due to their camouflage.
Unlike most nightjars that hunt in open air, Bates's Nightjar is thought to forage more within the dense forest understory, a unique adaptation among its family.
