The Large-tailed Nightjar is a common and widespread nightjar across much of Asia, characterized by its relatively long tail. It is a highly adaptable species found in various open habitats, including near human settlements.
Where to spot
Widespread across South, East, and Southeast Asia, inhabiting open woodlands, scrub, plantations, and even suburban gardens and parklands.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, repetitive call, which is often the easiest way to detect it. Look for its eyeshine along roads or tracks at night. During the day, it roosts camouflaged on the ground or a low branch.
