Spotted
The Spot-winged Nightjar is a small, cryptically patterned bird belonging to the nightjar family. Its superb camouflage allows it to blend seamlessly into its arboreal or terrestrial surroundings during the day. This species is a nocturnal insectivore, primarily active at dusk and dawn.
Where to spot
Typically found in humid forests, forest edges, and woodlands across parts of South America, including eastern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina.
How to spot
Look for it perched lengthwise on branches or on the ground. Its calls, often a series of rapid 'churrs' or whistles, are usually the first clue to its presence. Using a spotlight at night can reveal its eyeshine.
When to spot
Best observed during twilight hours (dusk and dawn) or on moonlit nights when it is most active. It rests quietly during the day.
Its intricate plumage patterns mimic tree bark or dead leaves, making it incredibly difficult to spot even when it's just a few feet away.
