Spotted
A very small and pale crombec, with sandy-brown upperparts and creamy-white underparts, blending perfectly with the arid, light-colored environments it inhabits. It has a short tail.
Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid scrubland, thornbush, and dry acacia woodlands in the Horn of Africa, primarily Somalia and adjacent parts of Ethiopia and Kenya.
How to spot
Its pale plumage provides excellent camouflage, making it hard to spot. Look for its active, furtive movements in low vegetation. Listen for its high-pitched, somewhat indistinct calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the cooler parts of the day (early morning, late afternoon).
The Somali Crombec is incredibly well-adapted to extremely arid conditions, often found in desolate, sparse scrubland where few other insectivorous birds can thrive.
