Spotted
A large, long-tailed warbler with a striking black malar stripe (moustache) and pale supercilium, contrasting with its streaky brown upperparts and pale underparts.
Where to spot
Tall grasslands, dense bushland, marshy edges, and cultivation with dense cover across much of sub-Saharan Africa.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, distinctive, rattling, and often explosive song, usually delivered from a prominent perch amidst grass or reeds. It can be elusive in dense cover, so patience is key.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal and observable during the breeding season (often the wet season), when males sing from exposed perches.
