Spotted
A widespread, small, and rather plain crombec with olive-brown upperparts, greyish underparts, and a very short tail. It has a relatively long, pointed bill for its size.
Where to spot
Savanna woodlands, dry forests, scrubland, and acacia bush in a broad band across sub-Saharan Africa, north of the equatorial forest belt.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often high-pitched and metallic calls, which are easier to detect than the bird itself. Look for its active movements gleaning insects from foliage, often with its short tail cocked.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed in the mornings when it is most active foraging. Breeding periods vary regionally, often linked to the onset of rains.

Despite its widespread distribution, the Northern Crombec is often overlooked due to its small size, subdued plumage, and habit of foraging quietly within dense bushes and trees.
