Spotted
A small, somewhat plump longbill with plain olive-brown upperparts and a paler, often buffy-tinged, belly. It possesses the typical long, slender bill of its genus.
Where to spot
Moist lowland and montane forests, primarily in the understory, in East Africa (Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique).
How to spot
Look for its subtle plumage and observe its active foraging amongst dense foliage. Its calls are distinctive, a series of short, clear whistles, which are often the best clue to its presence.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active in the early mornings. Breeding often coincides with local wet seasons.
Kretschmer's Longbill is another example of a species that thrives in the dense, often overlooked, undergrowth of African forests, relying on its camouflage and calls for survival.
