Spotted
Heinroth's Shearwater is a poorly known and extremely rare seabird endemic to the Bismarck Archipelago and Solomon Islands. It is almost entirely dark-plumaged, setting it apart from most other shearwater species.
Where to spot
Known from very few sightings in the waters around the Bismarck Archipelago and Solomon Islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Its breeding locations are unknown.
How to spot
Observation is extraordinarily challenging and generally limited to incidental sightings during pelagic surveys in its suspected range. Look for its small size and entirely dark plumage, which helps differentiate it from other shearwaters in the region.
When to spot
Sightings are opportunistic and extremely rare, with no specific 'best time' for observation due to its elusive nature and unknown breeding cycle.
This shearwater is one of the most enigmatic seabirds, with very few confirmed sightings and its breeding grounds remaining largely undiscovered, contributing to its 'mystery bird' status.
