Spotted
The Mascarene Petrel is a critically endangered and extremely rare dark petrel endemic to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean. It is known from very few sightings.
Where to spot
Known primarily from a few sightings off Réunion and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Its breeding grounds are unconfirmed but suspected in the high mountains of these islands.
How to spot
Similar in appearance to other dark petrels. Identify by its entirely dark sooty-brown plumage and relatively long, pointed wings. Due to its extreme rarity and remote habitat, observation is exceptionally challenging and requires specialized expeditions to the Mascarene region.
When to spot
Sightings are highly opportunistic and incredibly rare, potentially year-round in its assumed marine range. No clear seasonal patterns due to lack of data.

This species has been exceptionally difficult to locate, with many years passing between confirmed sightings, indicating either extreme rarity or highly elusive behavior, possibly nesting in inaccessible volcanic caves.
